# 吗 (ma) vs 呢 (ne) vs 吧 (ba): Chinese Sentence-Final Particles

Source: https://sentencecoach.com/grammar/ma-vs-ne-vs-ba
Level: HSK 1–2

All three sit at the very end of a sentence with a neutral tone. 吗 turns a statement into a true yes/no question: 你是老师吗？ "Are you a teacher?" 呢 asks a bounce-back or "where/what about…?" question (我很好，你呢？ "I'm fine, and you?", 我的书呢？ "Where's my book?") or marks an ongoing action (正在吃饭呢). 吧 makes a suggestion ("let's…"), softens a request, or asks for confirmation when you already guess the answer (你是中国人吧？ "You're Chinese, right?").

Patterns:
- Statement + 吗？: Yes/no question: 你明天来吗？
- Topic / Noun + 呢？: "What about X?" or "Where is X?": 你呢？ 我的手机呢？
- 在 / 正在 + Verb + 呢: Ongoing action in statements: 他在睡觉呢.
- Suggestion / Command + 吧: "Let's…" or polite imperative: 我们走吧, 快吃吧.
- Guess + 吧？: Seeking confirmation ("…right?"): 他是你们老师吧？

Examples:
- 你喜欢喝中国茶吗？ (nǐ xǐ huan hē zhōng guó chá ma?) — Do you like drinking Chinese tea?
- 我想喝杯咖啡，你呢？ (wǒ xiǎng hē bēi kā fēi, nǐ ne?) — I'd like a cup of coffee—what about you?
- 时间不早了，我们快回家吧。 (shí jiān bù zǎo le, wǒ men kuài huí jiā ba.) — It's getting late; let's hurry home.
- 外面下雨了，你带伞了吧？ (wài miàn xià yǔ le, nǐ dài sǎn le ba?) — It's raining outside; you brought an umbrella, right?

Common mistakes:
- ✗ 你叫什么名字吗？ → ✓ 你叫什么名字？: Question-word sentences (什么, 谁, 哪儿, 怎么) are already questions; never add 吗 at the end.
- ✗ 我的钥匙吗？ → ✓ 我的钥匙呢？: A noun alone + 呢 asks "Where is my key?"; 吗 can only follow a full statement.
- ✗ 我们一起去看电影吗。（meaning "Let's go watch a film"） → ✓ 我们一起去看电影吧。: Suggestions ("let's…") end with 吧, not 吗.

FAQ:
- Q: What is the difference between 你是老师吗？ and 你是老师吧？?
A: 你是老师吗？ is an open question when you do not know. 你是老师吧？ means you already think they are a teacher and are just confirming ("You're a teacher, aren't you?").
