变调规则The four tone-change rules every learner needs
- 一 (yī) before 4th tone → yí一个 (yí gè), 一定 (yí dìng), 一样 (yí yàng).
- 一 (yī) before tones 1, 2, 3 → yì一天 (yì tiān), 一年 (yì nián), 一起 (yì qǐ).
- 不 (bù) before 4th tone → bú不是 (bú shì), 不去 (bú qù), 不客气 (bú kè qi).
- 3rd tone + 3rd tone → 2nd + 3rd你好 (nǐ hǎo → ní hǎo), 很好 (hěn hǎo → hén hǎo).
Common questions
Why does 一 (yī) change tone in spoken Chinese?
In isolation or in numbers (第一, 一二三), 一 is first tone (yī). Before a fourth-tone syllable (一个, 一定, 一下) it changes to second tone (yí). Before a first, second or third-tone syllable (一天, 一年, 一起) it changes to fourth tone (yì).
When does 不 (bù) change to bú?
不 is fourth tone (bù) before tones 1, 2 and 3 (不吃, 不来, 不好), and rises to second tone (bú) before another fourth-tone syllable (不是 bú shì, 不去 bú qù, 不对 bú duì).
What is third-tone sandhi (三声变调)?
When two third-tone syllables meet (你好 nǐ hǎo, 可以 kě yǐ, 很好 hěn hǎo), the first syllable is pronounced as a rising second tone (ní hǎo, ké yǐ, hén hǎo), though textbooks still print both as third tone.
How do I know whether 得 or 地 is read "de"?
After a verb or adjective to show degree or potential (跑得快, 听得懂), 得 is neutral-tone de; in words like 得到 (dédào) or 觉得 (juéde) or modal 得 (děi "must"), it keeps its full reading. Before a verb (认真地学习), 地 is neutral-tone de; in nouns like 地方 (dìfang) or 地铁 (dìtiě), it is fourth-tone dì.
