参加 (cānjiā) vs 参观 (cānguān): "join" vs "visit"
参加 means to take part in an activity, meeting, exam, competition or organization: 参加比赛 "take part in a competition", 参加婚礼 "attend a wedding". 参观 means to visit and look around a place (like a museum, factory or school) as an observer: 参观博物馆 "visit a museum".
