用法How to use 上面
上面 is a place noun meaning "on top of / above" or "the upper part". It usually follows a noun: X 上面 = on/above X, and it can also stand alone as a subject (上面很干净). In writing it can mean "the above-mentioned part" (上面说的). The pinyin is shàngmiàn, commonly also pronounced shàngmian with a neutral tone.

上面vs上
In everyday locative expressions, 上 is normally bound to a noun (桌子上、书上) and cannot normally stand alone as a subject meaning "the top"; 上面 is a full noun and can stand alone, e.g. 上面很干净. Note that 上 also occurs independently in fixed expressions such as 上有天堂,下有苏杭 and in verbal uses like 上楼.
