饿 means "to be hungry" and is used as an adjective-like verb: a person is the subject and 饿 describes their state. Say 我饿了 for "I'm hungry now" (with 了 showing change of state), or add 很/不 for degree and negation, as in 很饿, 不饿. It commonly appears in questions like 你饿不饿？
