了解 (liǎojiě) vs 理解 (lǐjiě) vs 明白 (míngbai): "understand" in Chinese
了解 means to know well or find out information about a person, place or situation: 我很了解他 "I know him inside out", 了解中国文化 "learn about Chinese culture". 理解 means to comprehend a deep meaning or empathize with someone's feelings/position: 我理解你的心情 "I understand how you feel". 明白 is everyday "get it / clear" for instructions or explanations: 你明白我的意思吗？
