New HSK 4 Exam Format (HSK 3.0): Question Types and Timing
The official new HSK 4 sample paper has 70 questions and takes about 85 minutes: listening (32 questions, about 20 min), reading (32 questions, 30 min) and writing (6 questions, 25 min). A separate speaking paper has 5 questions and takes about 20 minutes.

How many questions are on the new HSK 4?
The official sample paper has 70 questions: listening (32 questions, about 20 min), reading (32 questions, 30 min) and writing (6 questions, 25 min).
How long is the new HSK 4 exam?
About 85 minutes, including 5 minutes for personal details and 5 minutes after listening to fill in the answer sheet on the paper test.
Does the new HSK 4 have writing?
Yes. Look at a picture and write one sentence using the given word. Write a short text of at least 80 characters on a given topic.
Does the new HSK 4 have a speaking test?
Yes, as a separate paper. The sample has 5 questions in about 20 minutes. Ask your test centre how to register for it and check whether your programme requires it.
Does the new HSK 4 paper show pinyin?
No. The official sample paper is in characters, apart from any pinyin clues given in a writing task.
How many words do I need for the new HSK 4?
2,000 numbered entries in total in the official 2025 syllabus, including 1,000 introduced at this level.
What is the pass mark for the new HSK 4?
CTI’s sample papers do not state one, and we have not found a published pass mark. Do not assume the HSK 2.0 marks carry over.
